Last year was the animated movie Sing, where the koala Buster Moon starts a singing competition, and animals from all around the city gather for auditions. He selects the most talented ones and begins to plan the show. Doesn't expect that next to his own money problems the members will bring their issues onto stage too. Like the young gorilla Johnny whose father makes him the driver of the getaway car, Rosita the pig, a housewife and mother of 25 children, Ash dumped teenage porcupine, etc.
The songs are nice, and if not for anything else you will feel entertained as nostalgia fills you. My problem was that it ended so abrupt. If it would have a real ending, this could have been a great movie. As it is, around average. Just got to know that there is a sequel planned, so it still has some hope.
Then there was a Hungarian short film created, which you might have heard about as it won an Oscar. Not sure why it's translated as "Sing", the original title is "Everybody", but it doesn't really matter.
The story takes place in Budapest in 1991. Zsófi transfers to a new elementary school and becomes friends with Liza. Zsófi joins the award-winning school choir but she is told not to sing out loud by the music teacher, because she doesn't consider her good enough and the choir is preparing for a big competition. Seeing Zsófi visibly hurt Liza digs, till she gets to know the truth. Together they realize that there are many in the group who were asked by the teacher the same thing.
To tell the truth I didn't know about the story till the Oscars came along, but then watched it, and it's quite good. I liked both the atmosphere, the songs, acting and the message. If you find it anywhere with subs, it's worth a shot.
